A Legacy Forged in Fairways: Honoring Marty and Bobbi Johnson
The fairways of the Midwest echo with stories of dedication, and none resonate quite like those of Marty and Bobbi Johnson. Recently, the golfing community came together to celebrate their remarkable contributions, marking not only the 48th anniversary of Covington Links in South Sioux City, Nebraska but also a lifetime devoted to shaping the game. For decades, the Johnsons have been more than just builders and caretakers; they’ve been architects of dreams and the heart of a community, crafting and nurturing golf courses that have touched the lives of countless players.

Pioneering a Golfing Landscape
Their journey began in 1964, a time when the landscape of Midwest golf was ripe for transformation. Over the years, Marty embarked on a mission that spanned nine states, leaving his mark on over 300 golf course projects. His vision was clear: to create accessible, community-focused golf courses that welcomed players of all skill levels. “They would work with those developers and find affordable golf and build phenomenal courses to at least give golfers the experience and entry point to start the game. And they have really changed the landscape of the Midwest through these states with the courses they built in these small communities,” said Justin Apel, the executive director of the Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA).

Covington Links: A Testament to Dedication and Family
Among their many achievements, Covington Links holds a special place. This year, the course celebrated its 48th anniversary, a milestone that intertwines with the Johnsons’ personal history. Their honeymoon story is legendary: driving straight to Fargo to work on a golf course, a testament to their unwavering commitment. While Marty focused on construction, Bobbi and their daughter, Shelly Uhing, became the heart and soul of Covington Links, managing everything from mowing the greens to running the clubhouse. Later, Shelly’s husband joined the team as the superintendent, making it a true family affair.

Recognition and Heartfelt Appreciation
The Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA) presented the Johnsons with well-deserved recognition, acknowledging their decades of service and profound influence on the industry. The gathered attendees, a mix of family, patrons, and fellow golf professionals, shared a palpable sense of gratitude. The day was filled with stories, laughter, and a clear appreciation for the Johnsons’ dedication. The collective sentiment was one of deep respect for their contributions and their lasting impact on the golfing community.

An Enduring Legacy
Marty and Bobbi Johnson’s legacy extends beyond the fairways they’ve shaped. They’ve built more than golf courses; they’ve built communities, fostered a love for the game, and left an indelible mark on the Midwest’s golfing landscape. Their story is a reminder of the power of passion, family, and the enduring impact of a lifetime dedicated to a shared vision.
Thank you, Marty and Bobbi, for your extraordinary contributions to the world of golf.
